White Christmas

We had a white Christmas here in Seattle this year and it was very pretty. We ended up with about three inches where I live. Thankfully the roads were mostly clear by the time most people were out and about. I woke up early though, so headed off with my camera to the park when it was full dark with snow on the roads. This looks like daylight, but it was actually taken an hour before sunrise. The snow was still falling, but due to the 30 second exposure you can’t see it.

I hope Santa was good to you this year!

  1. It must have been really dark for this to be a 30 second exposure! Amazing, it looks like mid morning on a cloudy day. I hope it wasn’t as cold there as here. I had a very peaceful and quiet (other than the waves pounding outside) Christmas. I hope you had a great day!

    • It was *very* dark looking back into the trees! In order to get it bright enough I not only needed 30 seconds (the longest the camera will go without using bulb mode), but I was also at ISO 800. Night photography can be weird that way. With clouds reflecting back city light pollution (and from snow) you often don’t get a dark sky to clue you in it’s a night shot.

Thankfully it was nothing like the cold you’re having! It was right around 30 degrees.
