Park Events This Weekend

This coming weekend will be a busy one as we head into Seafair with some great events taking place all over the city, including some popular cultural festivals. Below I’ve highlighted three events taking place at city parks.

Annual Seafair Milk Carton Derby

Saturday the 15th

8 am – 4 pm

Free to watch, $25 to register and race.

This event has been held every year since 1972 and is silly fun. Contestants build (somewhat) functional watercraft out of milk cartons and then race them on Greenlake. See details here.

Seafair Pow Wow

Friday the 14th – Sunday the 16th

Friday 4 pm – 10 pm, Saturday 10 am – 10 pm, Sunday 10 am – 8 pm.

Friday evening is free, Saturday and Sunday admission is $5 for ages 12+. (Donations to help defray costs of putting on the event gladly accepted.)

United Indians of all Tribes is hosting their 30th annual pow wow at Daybreak Star in Discovery Park.  All are welcome. Activities include processions, traditional and modern dances, food, arts and crafts booths, etc. The public is invited to join in the dancing in between the scheduled dances. Read the FAQ, especially if you’re a photographer, so you understand expected etiquette. See details here.

Dragonfest

Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th.

12 pm – 8 pm on Saturday, 12 pm – 6 pm on Sunday.

Admission is free.

Dragonfest is fourteen hours of non-stop cultural performances, including Chinese lion and dragon dances, Korean drumming, Pacific Islander dancing, and martial arts demonstrations. Over 40 area restaurants participate in the $3 Food Walk, where you walk the neighborhood and can sample a wide variety of tasty international $3 bites. Held at Hing Hay Park in Chinatown. If you can Park & Ride or take transit to the nearby International District Station (2 blocks from park) it’s a good idea since parking in Chinatown might be very difficult to come by. See details here.

    • All of these sound fun to me, but I don’t handle stressful parking situations and crowds very well. You can go enjoy for me and post pics on your blog. 🙂

Oh wait, you’re not even in the state right now, are you?
