    • Evidently it depends on where you are. In Western Washington, especially in more urban areas, GBHs have adapted well to living in close proximity to humans. A couple of these herons were trying to fish less than 20 feet away from me. But I read in a post from a photographer a while back that they are a somewhat shy species where they live, which I found interesting.

      The neat thing is that when you do see one they are a lot easier to photograph than little flitty birds because they are so big and stay relatively still for long periods of time.

  1. I love GBHs. Here in the Phoenix area, they are somewhat common around the small lakes in town but it’s always a thrill to see them because they are so fascinating-looking. And you’re right, they are easier to photograph than small birds.
