If you love great blue herons, this is a great time of year to visit Commodore Park. The herons are everywhere. Many of the young birds from the rookery have fledged and are learning to hunt, and adults are supplying food for chicks still in the nest.

Evidently it depends on where you are. In Western Washington, especially in more urban areas, GBHs have adapted well to living in close proximity to humans. A couple of these herons were trying to fish less than 20 feet away from me. But I read in a post from a photographer a while back that they are a somewhat shy species where they live, which I found interesting.
The neat thing is that when you do see one they are a lot easier to photograph than little flitty birds because they are so big and stay relatively still for long periods of time.

I love GBHs. Here in the Phoenix area, they are somewhat common around the small lakes in town but it’s always a thrill to see them because they are so fascinating-looking. And you’re right, they are easier to photograph than small birds.
