


Matthews Beach is one of the best spots in Seattle to observe American wigeons. They hang out here in large flocks this time of year, grazing on the lawn and dabbling for water plants. On this trip I even saw a male Eurasian wigeon mixed in, but didn’t get a clear photo of him. (The Eurasians are uncommon visitors all the way from Siberia.)



Sunday was a wild weather day. In the morning it snowed north and south of Seattle. The snow skipped us in the city due to the Olympic rainshadow. In the afternoon the clouds cleared out, but the wind was howling down from the northwest.
I decided that the unexpected opportunity was too good to pass up, so I headed up to Edmonds with my camera two hours before sunset.
