Photographing the Bloodmoon

I went to Magnuson Park to watch and photograph the lunar eclipse last night, along with several hundred other Seattleites. It was quite the experience.

I still vividly remember my first lunar eclipse. My first job in Seattle was as a delivery driver on graveyard shift. It was in the wee hours, near the beginning of my route, and I started getting a little freaked out because the moon seemed to be slowly disappearing. It finally dawned on me what was happening, but it took a while for the realization.

Since then I’ve seen several partial eclipses. While I now know immediately what is happening, it’s still a rather spooky experience. Sunday was the first time I’ve ever set out specifically with a plan to watch an eclipse.

Solar Trash Compactors in Parks

I noticed these trash cans at Twin Ponds Park in Shoreline looked a bit different, so took a closer look. They are actually solar-powered trash compactors. One is for recycling and the other for garbage.

As the containers fill up a mechanism inside automatically crunches down the refuse, making it take up less space. The compactor is powered by solar cells in the top of the bins.

Want to get dirty?

If you have a penchant for playing in the dirt and would like to contribute to area parks there are some upcoming volunteer days for the King County park system. All but the first date (which has already passed) are in October. The county is looking for people to help with planting native species in restoration projects. If that work sounds a bit too physically demanding, the first date is for weeding potted plants in a park nursery.
